1. Secateurs: Your Everyday Workhorse

Secateurs (hand pruners) are designed for one-handed use on stems up to 20mm thick, roughly the diameter of a pencil. They come in two distinct styles, and they don't work the way most people think.

Bypass Secateurs (For Soft, Green Wood)

  • How they work: Two sharp blades pass each other exactly like a pair of scissors.

  • How they work: A single sharp blade comes down onto a flat, blunt block the anvil.
  • The professional difference: Cheap, unbranded anvil pruners tend to smash straight down, crushing the stem. However, premium engineered anvil tools use a clever "drawing action"  as you squeeze, the blade slides slightly backwards across the anvil as it closes. This creates a genuine slicing motion that cuts cleanly through tough, dry, or fibrous wood without mangling it, while requiring far less hand pressure than bypass pruners.

 

2. Loppers: The Power of the Shifting Fulcrum

Why Ratchet Loppers Change the Game

Standard loppers rely entirely on your arm strength. If you hit a tough knot, you have to squeeze with everything you have. Ratchet loppers solve this completely by using a shifting fulcrum (pivot point).

The Golden Rule: Clean and Sharp

A blunt blade does not cut, it tears. Always wipe down your blades after use to remove sticky sap and run an oily rag over them to prevent rust in a damp British shed.
