Give your seed potatoes the perfect head start with this solid wooden chitting tray. At 54cm x 36cm x 9cm, it's a compact alternative to the traditional vintage farm crate (typically 75cm x 46cm) — ideal for a bright windowsill, cool porch, or unheated frost-free garage.

Please note: This is a smaller tray by design — approximately 70% of the length of a classic full-size farm crate. If you're used to the original vintage size, this is a modern compact version. Perfect for a single layer of seed potatoes in a typical home setting.

How to Chit Potatoes Correctly

Chitting encourages strong, short, healthy sprouts before planting — giving your potatoes a head start for an earlier, heavier crop. To do it right, your potatoes need:

  • Light (but not scorching sun): Place the tray on a cool windowsill, porch, or unheated frost-free garage. Light is crucial — it produces tough, sturdy sprouts.
  • Cool, frost-free temperatures: Keeps growth controlled and sprouts compact.
  • Correct placement: Stand seed potatoes upright with the blunt end (where you can see the most 'eyes') facing upwards.

Why Darkness Doesn't Work

Chitting in the dark or under newspaper produces long, pale, weak sprouts that snap off easily when planting — setting your crop back significantly. Correctly chitted potatoes will have small, stocky, dark green or purple sprouts that are firmly attached and ready to grow.
